Bulletin Board Bullies

Ironically, as I write this, I think of how often I voted in agreement with my fellow board members. Where we differ is how the association is run--individual egos and agendas vs. the community at large, behind- the -scenes deals and discussions and snake oil laden answers to resident questions vs. the plain truth. Yes we different in management style. But that's democracy.

A new rule was passed by the board. Residents are no longer permitted to post a sign offering a service--no babysitting, no painting or handyman work, no tax accounting by a resident CPA who simply wanted to offer her services at a discounted rate to help neighbors in this economy.

In the past, any unit owner could post a 4x6 sign selling an item or service. Joe could post a black and white notice to sell his unit, Jackie could post a notice about babysitting after school, Misha could colorize his notice offering his service as a painter. The free bulletin board is a small benefit when living in a close-knit condo community. Never did we have a problem. Never did we have a complaint. Never did the FCC threaten to sue the association for false advertisement. But Ana Guillen made this her first Presidential initiative--to end all notices for services. So little Susie can't make additional money as a dog walker or babysitter in her own community. The answer to why was devoid of any common sense. "Because it poses a liability". What liability? No explanation was given. Walking on the lobby, marble floor poses more risk for a slip and fall accident. Does this mean we should ask everyone to crawl on their hands and knees?

I recall the time I visited a communist country and the leaders only spoke--never answering questions. Just listening to the sound of their voice. The similarities are uncanny and disturbing. What's next? Well, the worse was yet to come.

Rules are created to minimize or prevent a recurring problem. What was the problem? There was never a problem.

Let's see, the President spent association money consulting an attorney on an issue that is practiced by billions of people daily in the world of free speech and free market. A standard practice where someone can post a FREE notice in the Miami Herald for selling any item under $500, click "I agree to the policy of the Miami Herald". It's called "signing a disclaimer". What a concept! This is practiced in democracies. This new rule spearheaded by Ana is a tell-tale sign of a dictatorship. I fear what oppressive events await us.

Shouldn't we be focused on the many projects that demand our attention? The eyesore of the entrance ramp? The mysterious pipe noise that is emanating from the garage level? The mold-infested carpets in the hallways which need replacing. Most of our maintenance is for the reserves--for these long-term projects. Should not this be the priority?

That's just my humble opinion.
